A punchup at a wedding

In 2003 Thom Yorke talked about the lyrics he'd put in Radiohead's then new album, Hail To The Thief and said they'd come from ".... the feeling that we are entering an age of intolerance and fear where the power to express ourselves in a democracy and have our voices heard is being denied us."

Here we are, 2011. Any further questions?

Ladies and gentlemen, we present "A Punchup at a Wedding", one of the angriest songs ever set to a cool jamming beat.

The Friday OT: Radiohead; Electioneering

Back in the days when Radiohead really used to rock out.

The band struts it well on this live performance on Jay Leno's show and your author turns it up loud to drown out the incessant bullshit coming from the mouths of Peru's candidates. Ten days and there'll only be two voices left....can't come soon enough.

Meanwhile, a Friday OT extra as the person who took this video just days ago shares vacation fun time.

The Friday OT: Radiohead; Codex

The water's clear and innocent.

The routine-jarring newsflow out of Japan has taken the wind out of my sails today, to be frank. However, by some quirk of fortune one of the new Radiohead album tracks, named Codex, manages to evoke the day and captures far more than just a few bars of music and a bunch of lyrics. Utterly, utterly sublime music that is sad and uplifting at once.

Here are the words. I hope you listen to them. Best wishes to Japan on a very difficult day for the country.

Sleight of hand,
Jump off the end.
Into a clear lake,
No one around.

Just dragonflies,
Flying to the side.
No one gets hurt,
You've done nothing wrong.

Slide your hand,
Jump off the end.
The water's clear and innocent.
The water's clear and innocent.

to label the moment

some days are better than others.

Catch you tomorrow.

PS: Yes I know how melancholy this song is, but it's also life-affirming Every time 5:23 to 5:33 comes around I can't help but breath in, in and in more...there's no breathing out there. The lungs fill and the meaning of the word conscious (aware of one's own existence) is writ large. If that's not enough Pseud's Corner for y'all, please let me know. I adore Radiohead and I'm not ashamed to admit it.

The Friday OT: Radiohead; Everything In Its Right Place

In a recent article in The UK Times (ok, they're going to be Britbiased, but WTF) Radiohead's Kid A came out as the best album of the decade. I agree. It's sad on one level that the best came out in the year 2000 and it's been downhill since then. On the other hand, when I read the article the memories of jawdrop-stunned when listening to it for the first time came flooding back.

This is a non-official video made by some arty type that I found on youtube. It's not bad, but you'll do just as well to listen to the track and flick over to another tab on your interwebs....and i betcha if you do you won't be able to concentrate on any reading until the music stops.

There are two colours in my head.

The Friday OT: Radiohead, How To Disappear Completely (live)

I'm not here. This isn't happening.

Wowsers, those dudettes and dudes in the studio audience picked the right night to go watch some live music.
