Think military coups are "Bad" but can't be bothered to protest?Querid@s camaradas,Imperialism has once again found new allies and methods to try to subvert democracy in Latin America. Help us fight back against the human rights challenged Honduran coup government and their big money apoligists in one of two ways. Or both (C'mon it can't just be 3 dodgy Central Americans and a professor at the protest, people)Obviously, everyone would sooo love to tell Chlopak, Leonard, Schechter & Associates in person what they think of their acceptance of $300,000 worth of blood-stained greenbacks in order to help the golpistas de mierda (coup government) sabotage negotiations and pathetically try to maintain their illegal reign through repression and fantasyland propaganda. But hey, maybe you can't make it to the protest because you are detained without charge in an Honduran prison, or because of "work" or some unhealthy fear of the "spooks". If so, we will not doubt your revolutionary zeal THIS TIME, but only if you sign on to the email;) Use your real name. Or not. Whatever works for you. Or else the terrorists win: http://www.SOAW.org/clsaTo summarize, if you are a:1) Gold star super duper avenger of all that is just and beautiful:Protest Monday Oct. 19th at 12:30, offices of the mercenaries w/ the impossible names, near Dupont Circle, 1850 M Street NW2) Bronze medal "I don't ever want to have to say 'Micheletti' again, but believe it or not I have full-time employment and/or am lazy" freedom defender:Online Action : Now, tomorrow, next week, very late at night in the hope that their email accounts and blackberries are synced.Which is extremely common within the douchebag community, so . . .¿Quién dijo miedo? Honduras: Al Giordano nails it

I'm shamelessly stealing the cool Latuff cartoon that accompanies Al Giordano's piece on Honduras, Brazil, what Lula said today at the UN and lots of et ceteras. But to read the most excellent analysis you have to click this link and go over to his website. Well worth your trouble. Go go go.

Honduras update: The hypocrisy shows through
Isn't it amazing that the pieces of shit who illegally threw out President Zelaya to "protect the constitution" have suddenly become so desperate to cling on to power that they suspend the very same constitution?
This from top English language site Honduras Coup 2009, first paragraph:

No More Constitution
The Micheletti regime, about 4 am this morning, violently dislodged the protesters outside the Brazilian embassy with tear gas, pepper spray and water canons. Radio Globo reports THEY SUSPENDED THE CONSTITUTION and declared a state of emergency. Among the rights suspended are the right of free circulation and assembly.

UPDATE: Quotha has been doing some great updating work on the fast-breaking story. Find the site here.
Honduras: Freddy Cuevas, AP whore

I knew they'd spin it, but the following Disassociated Press newswire report on Zeyala's return to Honduras is one of many lamentable efforts being vomited to the English-speaking world this morning. Just consider the title and first paragraph....
Zelaya's daring return reignites Honduras crisis.......as in the world of so-called journalist Freddy Cuevas of AP the Honduras crisis was all over and had been "reignited", Zelaya was "deposed" where in fact every single sovereign state in the world still recognizes him as the current President of Honduras and the people that ran the illegal coup were an "interim government" thus lending them respectability. Do I laugh or do I cry?
TEGUCIGALPA, Honduras – The daring return of deposed President Manuel Zelayas creates a sharp challenge to interim leaders who overthrew him — and for the upcoming election they had hoped would resolve the crisis begun with their coup (continues here)
One day, I hope you have the chance to drink fresh milk on an estancia in the pampa region of Argentina. You'll then be able to compare it to the hormone-laden pasteurized, homogenized and plastic-package product you drink where you live.
One day, your eyes may be opened to the true taste of a banana by plucking a ripe one from a tree in Ecuador or Colombia or wherever. Until then you'll have to make do with the fruits picked green and still ripening in containers as they pass through the Panama canal.
Freddy Cuevas supplies yet another fake product to the world and its consumers again think they're getting a true taste of Latin America.

Today's must-read post on Honduras...
...comes from Honduras Coup 2009. Once again somebody who actually knows the country and knows what they're talking about shows how the coup apologists' arguments do not stand up to reason.

Elvin has left the building

Great news! Hillary Clinton and the rest of the two-faced hypocritical DC mob can stop worrying about saying one thing and doing the other now that Bill Conroy and Al Giordano have exposed the true relationship between the Honduras coupmongering shits and the US State Department.
Here's the link to their story that explains just how the USA is actively pumping money to the usurpers (What? you mean they lied to us, Otto??) and making sure that Micheletti's chosen protegé, pro-coup Presidential candidate Elvin Santos, gets his unfair share by writing cheques out to his privately owned company. All that and lots more in a real old-school full-on scoop of an article over at narconews. Go see for yourself.

Greg Grandin's Honduras List
Greg Grandin debated some leftover DC lobbyist called Lanny last week. Abiding has the video of the event and it's as close to intellectual carnage as is possible. I could get all high falutin' on you at this point and go for the blow-by-blow critique, but just go over yourself and see the mincement that Grandin makes of Davis. You don't need my thin commentaries laid on top of the real deal.
So anyhow, following on from that debate Grandin has put together an article at HuffPo that nails the lies used by Lanny on a point by point basis, all backed up with cross references and data and links and all the malarkey. So if you want a nice, clean, academically rigorous but simple to digest rundown of exactly why the happenings in Honduras is a shame on all houses and an affront to all Latin America (and the wider world for that matter), check out Grandin's post, it's linked right here.

Honduras coupmonger photoshop, part two
If you remember, we've already had the unspeakable fascists and their cohorts trying to make shit up via Photoshop, via this "where's da blood gone?" special. Now here's the latest photo doing the rounds amongst the liars and scoundrel pro-dictatorship press in the country.
Nuff said. Thanks to Honduras Resistencia for this one. My you coup apologist dumbasses have a lot to be proud of with this bunch. I'm just glad Pinochet didn't have Photoshop in the 70s.

Killing for peace in Honduras
"We had to destroy the village in order to save it."
Attributed to the massacre at My Lai
Direct translation from this news report from the Honduran border town of 'El Paraiso' (quite ironically, 'Paradise') near the place where President Zelaya tried to cross the border yesterday. Word has it that he's at the border again right now and talking to the military officers stationed there.
El Paraiso: The body of Pedro Mandiel, 24, appeared this morning in El Paraiso. He had been arrested last night by police, according to leaders that support ousted President Manuel Zelaya, although officers assigned to the zone deny any participation in the homicide. Mandiel was one of the people among demonstrators that yesterday waited (on the Honduras border) for the return of Zelaya.
According to the those reporting the death, among whom are members of the Centre of Investigation and Promotion of Human Rights (Ciprodeh), Mandiel was detained for non-compliance with the imposed military curfew and this morning his body appeared at a refuse dump with signs of handcuff injuries on his wrists and torture on his body. He died of knife wounds.
On being consulted by foreign and Honduran reporters, a police officer said that the official police station register would be made available to prove that Mandiel had not been detained.
UPDATE: Zelaya says he's going to camp out at the border and wait for his supporters. Sounds a bit farcical to me. Hope it doesn't rain.

Honduras: Mexfiles right, mailers wrong
A nice job from RG over at Mexfiles today, as he rounds up the latest on Honduras in one concise article. And he gets particular agreement from this blog about this excerpt, as the wingnuts and fruitcakes continue to pepper this humble corner of cyberspace with their ridiculous hatemail.
"..there is, in fact, no foreign support for Micheletti outside the far right, mostly among Latin exile circles in the United States and well-heeled expats within Honduras."The truth spoken plainly. So, this week our coveted award goes to all those coup apologists that are frittering away what's left of their wholly useless lives by writing into IKN with racist, hate-tinged bile and self-justifications of what is nothing more and nothing less than a fascist dictatorship. Enjoy, dumbasses:

For intelligent news and analysis on Honduras...
...stop coming to this blog cos you won't find much here. Better go to any (or all) of the following three sites;
Two Week's Notice, all academic and stuff. Greg Weeks knows Micheletti is a dumbass but is too polite to say so.
Latin America News Review, with Delacour getting it right nearly all the time on the issue.
Bloggings by boz, trying his very hardest to be neutral.

Mel's in Honduras (and other fun)

According to this report, President Mel Zelaya has made it into Honduras and has set up a secret location operations base inside the country. The source is a reporter with close links to Zelaya, one Sergio Miranda.
Meanwhile, Honduras Coup 2009 accuses the New York Times of being crap at Spanish...doesn't surprise me, but this time the newspaper's generalized LatAm mediocrity has led to a pretty serious case of Lost in Translation.
And if you're good at the Spanish lingo thing, check out this very complete note explaining why what happened was undoubtedly a full-on coup d'etat no matter what them thar wingnuts and fruitbars might tell you.

Honduras: 50 ways to leave your exile
You just slip in the back, Mel
Make a new plan, Mel
You don't need to be coy, Mel
Just get yourself free
Hop on the copter, Mel
You don't need to discuss much
Just drop out the hatch, Mel
And get Honduras free
(with apologies to Paul Simon)

AP filed this story tonight that has President Mel Zelaya en route for Honduras right here right now. Has Mel discovered that helicopters are smart options? Will the blocked roads all over the country help his cause? Looks like tomorrow may be a key day in the hoohah.
TEGUCIGALPA, Honduras — A top aide said exiled Honduran President Manuel Zelaya was heading home Thursday to set up an alternative seat of government inside the country, and will use it as his headquarters in a "final battle" against the coup leaders.
Zelaya's foreign minister, Patricia Rodas, said he is "on his way" back, but refused to say how or when he planned to enter Honduras. Zelaya's current whereabouts are unclear and the leaders who replaced him after the military sent him into exile have vowed to arrest him if he returns.
"Our president will be in Honduras at some point and some moment. He is already on his way. God protect him and the people of the Americas who are with him," Rodas told reporters in La Paz, Bolivia, where she yada yada continues here

Seven foreign journalists arrested in Honduras
Now you may or may not like the editorial line taken by Telesur and VTV, the two pro-Chávez TV news media currently covering the unfolding drama in Honduras. But do you think they deserve to be arrested for no apparent reason?
The news is that in the early hours of Sunday morning, Honduran National Police arrested two reporters, one technician and four camera crew from Telesur and VTV, and took them to an (as yet) unknown destination. Sorry, no link yet...I was e-mailed on this one.
Gotta love this dictatorship's idea of free speech.

Honduras: Must-read blog on the coup
Go here to read 'Honduras Coup 2009', a blog that is translating boatloads of information about what's going on in Honduras into English. The translations look very good to my eye.
A vital resource for anyone who wants to keep up with what's being thought and said in Honduras (by Hondurans, not unhinged gringos living in Honduras...read The Mex Files for a report on just how bad the anglo-saxon tinfoilhat brigade really is over there) but doesn't have the luxury of being proficient in Spanish.
Anyway, this post isn't about snark, it's about pointing you in the direction of a great EngLang resource on Honduras. Here's the link again, just to make sure.

Honduras: Enrique Ortez, the first of many to go

And so farewell racist pondscum Enrique Ortez, replaced as foreign spokesdumbass yesterday by another piece of pondscum that thinks he's president of Honduras. Local daily La Prensa reports that Ortez has this morning been replaced as chancellor by some dude named Robert Flores Bermudez who swore to uphold the good name of dictatorship and promised not to insult the leader of a country that owns a veritable shitload of nuclear weapons. Hat tip to the blog IKN wants to be when it grows up, Borev. Mojitos served. The end.
PS: By the way, there are still zero schools open in the country, with the president of the teachers' association making it clear as to why: "We are not going back until President Manuel Zelaya is reinstated." Nuff said.
UPDATE: Nicely done commenter Nell, reprinted here for easy access:

But "Queers, prostitutes, leftists, blacks" and anyone else Enrique Ortez views as not quite fully human have to hope he's not long in his new job, Justice and Government minister.
