Ecuador: I'm actually kind of disappointed so far...

¡PIÑATAAAAAA!

...with the response to yesterday's note. Only one person has cancelled his e-mail subscription in a huff (claiming to have lost X amount of money and having been ripped off by the locals left right and centre etc etc) and in fact subscriptions on RSS actually went up by a total of nine yesterday, so maybe I wasn't being offensive enough. I even had two mailers agreeing with my point of view (though hatemail/condescending attitudes have been in the majority so far). Part of the cancelling sub's rant (I have to remind myself that the subscription is free at this point) was to say that a reasonable return is needed to invest in a risky country like Ecuador. I mean, where do you start with someone who thinks they're intelligent but doesn't have the first clue about what you're trying to say?

Y'know, I'm not against greed as such. What I'm against is hypocrisy and dishonesty. When someone says outright 'I'm in it for the money' that's fine by me, as people honest with themselves and straightshooting with others tend to be good people and make up for rampant capitalism by doing good in other areas. But those people who put on the "oh but I care" talk, and explain that one of the reasons they chose to invest in this, that or the other poor country is to help society soon change their tune if they lose out via their own back pocket.

It's hypocrits I can't stand, not upfront Gecko-like greedies.
